How does make-up affect our skin?

Clean and looked after skin is usually skin that is natural. At certain times to give the face a bit of colour or to cover an imperfection you may choose to apply a layer of make-up.

What is in make-up?

Normally make-up which can be bought from any beauty product establishment is usually made of substances such as petrolatum, animal fats or minerals.

Although all of these substances can block the pores and the sebaceous ducts in the skin and create the appearance of pimples and blackheads, it is recommended to spend a few minutes reading the ingredients of the make-up to choose the least harmful option.

Therefore, choosing make-up with mineral pigments is the best option. Among the mineral pigments you should pay attention to titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, which are minerals with anti-inflammatory properties and they help us to maintain a healthy skin even with the use of cosmetics.

The facial skin can be sensitive to some fragrances, synthetic colours and conservatives, therefore it is preferable to avoid make-up composed of them when you can, along with silicones and severe emulsifying products.

Healthy skin and make-up, can the two be friends?

Make-up products have always been considered the number one enemy to healthy and beautiful skin. Nowadays using make-up products and having healthy facial skin is not impossible as long as you follow these recommendations.

  • Clean your face: At MartiDerm we always stress the essential role that cleaning the skin has on having a healthy and cared-for skin. Taking your facial make-up off at night before you go to bed is a step that you shouldn’t skip. Also remember to wash your skin every night, not only to remove your make-up but also the rest of the pollution, sweat and skin secretions that can block your pores and sebaceous ducts. Removing your make-up well each night avoids the appearance of acne breakouts, pimples or other infections which can appear on your face.
  • Use make-up with sun protection: The protection against the solar rays is fundamental to have healthy skin. When choosing your cosmetic facial products it is recommended to choose one with a sun protection factor. If it does not have a sun protection factor, applying a base of protection is the first step to follow.
  • Hydrate the skin before the application of make-up: The fact that you use make-up does not mean that you have to forgo hydrating your skin. To maintain a healthy and cared-for skin it is vital that you don’t forgo the hydrating solutions whose main function is to add moisture to the skin and to reduce the loss of water.

The skin doesn’t limit us as long as we know how to look after it well. If you look after it you will always look your best. See you in the next post!
