Scalp massages, a pleasure for your hair and body

Who doesn't like to relax while someone gives them a massage? During this ritual, we lose ourselves, disconnect and enjoy the experience. There are many different variations and lengths of massage and they focus on many different parts of the body. Back, leg and facial massages are the most common, but they aren’t the only types available.

Scalp massages, as well as being relaxing and enjoyable, have many health benefits for the whole body rather than just the scalp.

What do they involve and why are they important?

They involve a soft and methodical massage style focused on the strengthening the scalp through reactivating the circulatory system. Scalp massages have very positive effects on the rest of your body tissue and those who receive them feel an enjoyable sensation of peacefulness and relaxation.

As well as the pleasant and serene experience of the massage, there are also therapeutic purposes that can be felt throughout our entire body, diffusing major health benefits. What are these benefits?

  • The massages activate scalp circulation, strengthening hair from its root.
  • They dilate the capilary vessels and improve blood circulation, which reduces and helps cure headaches and migranes.
  • They help to alleviate visual strain.
  • They help to reduce stress and anxiety.
  • They stimulate lymphatic drainage, which is required to free the body from toxins and improve the immune system.
  • They increase production levels of endorphins and serotonins, two hormones which promote general good mood feelings.

How to give the massage

Ideally we would go to a specialist for a scalp massage, but the technique can also be learnt. Follow this advice to see how:‑¡

These guidelines are the most common for giving a massage, but other different ones also exist, depending on the intensity, pressure, and speed with which they are given.

  • The main aim of this massage style is relaxation. It consists of sliding the palm of the hand, or the fingertips, in a circular or spiral motion across the scalp with differing levels of intensity.
  • This style too creates soothing effects and consists of backwards and forwards or circular movements in a singular direction.
  • This involves quick small taps by either the fingertips, the palm of a cupped hand or the cubital (outside) edge of the little finger.
  • This consists of pressing a certain area of the scalp with the palm of your hand, fingertips or the fingers of a closed hand.
  • This style uses the palm of the hand or the fingertips to press lightly on the scalp whilst vibrations are produced.

Whichever type of scalp massage you choose, the important thing is that you do it frequently to maintain your hair and body in good condition and reap the rewards of such a relaxing and healthy experience.
